Entry-Level Firefighter Application Process Opening

The Application Process

Rincon Valley Fire Protection District, the City of Santa Rosa Fire Department, and the Windsor Fire Protection District are conducting a joint testing process, although each agency will hire separately. Applicants may apply to any or all of the departments.

The application process will open on Tuesday, May 8, 2012, and remain open until 400 applications have been received.

All applicants are to fill out an online employment application at http://agency.governmentjobs.com/srcity/default.cfm. When filling out the Supplemental Questionnaire, applicant should select the agency(ies) being applied to. Santa Rosa Fire Department salary and benefits information is available on this website; Rincon Valley and Windsor fire protection districts salaries and benefits are under negotiation; therefore, the information is not provided.

The Departments

Rincon Valley Fire Protection District and Windsor Fire Protection District are jointly managed through a joint powers agreement (JPA) entity, the Central Fire Authority of Sonoma County. Administration staff comprises one Fire Chief, one Assistant Chief, one Battalion Chief/Fire Marshal, two contract Battalion Chiefs, a Human Resources/Finance manager, an administrative assistant and a financial assistant.

Each department is an all-risk, combination department.

Rincon Valley Fire serves a population of 30,000 in 120 square miles that include portions of unincorporated Santa Rosa and one square mile of the Town of Windsor.

Windsor Fire serves a population of 30,000 in 30 square miles comprising most of the Town of Windsor and several square miles of surrounding unincorporated Sonoma County.

The Position

Working under the direct supervision of the engine company captain, responds to all types of emergency calls-structure, vegetation, vehicle, and other types of fires; medical calls; vehicle accidents-as well as public service calls, and community service and public education events.

Qualifications

Candidates for the Entry Level Firefighter position must, at time of application

Be 21 years of age or older

Have a California State Fire Marshal Firefighter 1 Certification. (If you have met the requirements but do not have the certificate, please submit a letter from the Fire Academy or Fire Chief that states you are qualified. If you are invited to an oral interview, you must bring the certificate with you.)

Have a valid California Firefighter Joint Apprenticeship Committee (CPAT) Card of Completion (dated within the past two years)

Have a current EMT Certificate

Be a nonsmoker

Selection Process

The selection process will include a written test and an oral board. Qualified candidates will be placed on a two-year list with the anticipation of future openings. Each District reserves the right to extend the list at its discretion. Upon acceptance of a job offer, candidate must agree to a polygraph, background investigation and physical and psychological examinations.

THE DEPARTMENT
Windsor Fire Protection District is a combination department serving 30,000 people in 30 square miles (5 sq miles within the Town of Windsor and 25 sq miles of surrounding rural, unincorporated area), responding to 1900 calls per year. The District employs a fire chief, battalion chief/fire marshal, six fire captains, six engineer/firefighters, an administrative assistant, and a financial assistant. Thirty volunteers support the paid suppression staff. The fleet consists of a 75-foot quint ladder truck, two Type-1 and two Type-3 engines, two water tenders (one an OES unit), a light rescue, and two chief officer vehicles and two utilities.

The District recently took delivery of a new Pierce 75-foot quint. A new, modern, “green” Station 2 is under construction on Windsor Road, with a projected in-service date of July 2009.
